Protest in Bangkok Against Management Plan Proposal at WHC Meeting
UPDATE : 30 July 2010
A number of demonstrators gathered in front of the UNESCO Office in Bangkok since last night to wait for the the World Heritage Committee's decision on the disputed Preah Vihear Temple.

More than 1,000 demonstrators, led by Chaiwat Sinsuwong, Karun Sai-ngarm, and Somboon Thongburam, have gathered on the sidewalk in front of the UNESCO Office in Bangkok since last night.

The group was protesting against Cambodia's attempt to list Preah Vihear Temple, which sits on un-demarcated land between Thailand and Cambodia, and its attempt to have the World Heritage Committee approve its management plan of the temple at the annual WHC Meeting in Brazil.

As the representative of the protesters, Chaiwat submitted a letter to UNESCO Bangkok's Chief Administration Officer, Edgar Sharuk, expressing opposition to Cambodia's attempt to unilaterally manage the disputed temple, and demanding that the issue be immediately removed from the conference's agenda.

Chaiwat said that although the committee has postponed its deliberation to next year, the issue remains unresolved.

He claimed that Cambodian representatives have been lobbying the committee to vote in their favor and could jeopardize Thailand's sovereignty.

The protesters were planning to stay overnight at the UNESCO Office, until the committee has made its decision.

However, according to the latest report, the World Heritage Committee has now postponed its decision to next year's conference in Bahrain. The demonstrators said they would make an announcement later this morning.
