| House Anti-graft Panel to Investigate Hike in Expressway Toll Fees |
| UPDATE : 12 November 2009 |
The House Committe on Anti-corruption will look into a plan to increase expressway toll fees from 35 baht to 85 baht of the Don Muang Tollway.
Charnchai Isarasenarak, Democrat MP from Nakhonnayok province and vice chairman of the House Commitee on Anti-corruption, revealed the committee will investigate a plan by the Don Muang Tollway to increase the expressway toll fees from 35 baht to 85 baht, as the plan would affect many people.
The house committee will also determine whether the concession awarded to Don Muang Tollway is lawful according to state-private joint venture act.
Should the concession contract be found in breach with the act, the contract will be nullified.
The committee has called for representatives from the Highway Department and the Transport Ministry to weigh in and it will also determine if there is any attempt to circumvent the law.
In a separate matter, the house meeting on Wednesday passed smoothly, unlike the previous two meetings.
MPs discussed draft bill on occupational health and workplace environment.
The coalition MPs supported the draft, as they want a more updated version of the law to govern these two areas and promote better quality of life for laborers.
The draft bill proposes setting up a committee of representatives from the private sector to evaluate and inspect workplaces, and setting up funds for laborers who are affected by occupational hazards.
However, the opposition MPs are more reluctant and said the government is putting the burden of taking care of the laborers on the private operators.
They also criticized the proposal to establish a private committee, as it could allow leeway for collusion.
They also pointed out that the evaluation and inspection of workplaces already fall under the responsibility of the Labor Department.
They urged that the issuance of this bill be carried out with interest of the laborers in mind.
