The foreign affairs minister has confirmed that the ministry did not request Cambodia to sack fugitive former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra from the post of Cambodia's economic adviser.

Foreign Affairs Minister Kasit Piromya has reiterated that the ministry did not submit a request to the Cambodian government, asking for the dismissal of fugitive former Thai PM Thaksin Shinawatra from the post of Cambodia's economic adviser as speculated.

Kasit said the matter is Cambodia's internal business and insisted that Thaksin is the cause of the dispute between Thailand and Cambodia.

Commenting on former foreign affairs minister Surakiart Sathirathai's suggestion for the Thai government to initiate talks with its Cambodian counterpart, Kasit said the government will listen to Surakiart's viewpoint as he is a Thai citizen. However, the democratic principle and the country's dignity must be taken into consideration in a bid to solve the problem.

Asked about the government's measures to help Thai engineer Siwarak Chutipong, who has been detained in Cambodia, Kasit confirmed that the ministry has tried its hardest to bring Siwarak home and now it is entirely up to the Cambodian judicial system.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said the dispute between Thailand and Cambodia still continues.

Suthep added that he views the current dispute between the two countries as an issue for Thailand and Cambodia to resolve and there is no need to bring it to the international arena.

Despite the current strain between the two countries, Suthep says today's Thai-Cambodian Joint Border Committee meeting will go on as planned because military and security relations need to be maintained to prevent tension along the Thai-Cambodian border.
